July 18th 2007 Statement to the media by Mr. Cris Seecheran, Executive Director (ag), at a news conference to provide an update of the Authority's activities. Pursuant to Section 21(3) of the Telecommunications Act, 2001, the Telecommunications Authority of Trinidad and Tobago hereby notifies that it received on 25 January 2007 and is now reviewing, an application from Parliament of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago for a Type 5 Concession for the provision of Free-to-Air Television Broadcasting Services. The Telecommunications Authority of Trinidad and Tobago has issued a News Release in order to correct any misconceptions which may have been created as a result of inaccurate reports about the role of the Authority regarding the programme “Breaking Barriers”. The Authority has issued a Request for Proposals from individuals or companies interested in providing public Broadband Wireless Access services in the lower 700 mhz, 12 ghz and 28 ghz bands. The Telecommunications Authority of Trinidad and Tobago advises that any person who operates a Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT or earth station for satellite transmission) without a licence in transmitting any event ,including but not limited to, events such as concerts, sporting events and carnival shows (including street parades), is acting in contravention of Section 36(1) of the Telecommunications Act. 03/04/06 Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is a generic term for technologies that use radio waves to automatically identify objects and people. At the seminar officials of the Authority introduced the concept of this ubiquitous technology to various stakeholder groups and conveyed information on its different applications as well as opportunities and challenges associated with its use. The presentation by Ms Nalini Mahadeo, the Authority’s Wireless Engineer, focused on trends and challenges regarding RFID technology, while that of Mr. Karyl Gajadhar, Compliance Analyst, dealt with RFID applications. Mr. Khalid Hassanali, the Authority’s Chairman, delivered the opening address.
